Do you shave or wax?!?

Recently I've started to get hair under my arms and I was wondering if you shave or wax? I don't really plan on shaving but I am wondering if it really does make your hair thicker. If you do shave, why? What's so bad about waxing apart from the pain because most of my friends shave rather than choose the more painful option.
